One vehicle synonymous with military operations around the world is the Land Rover. Starting with an initial order in 1948 for 48 Series 1 vehicles for the British Army, follow closely by a further 1878, the British Armed Forces have used Land Rovers in huge numbers and in many different roles. Many were civilian types adapted for military use while others such as the air portable Lightweight (one of the most successful military Land Rovers ever built) and the 101” Forward Control were specifically designed for the military. Land Rovers of various types have been used by all three British Armed Forces and by numerous foreign countries as well. Its many roles include cargo and troop transport, ambulance, reconnaissance, bomb disposal, communications and line laying. Represented here are a small number of the many types and liveries used by all three forces dating from the late 1940s to the current day.
